The U.S. Department of Justice has announced that a federal jury has found a Chinese-Swiss biologist conspiracy to steal research from pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, saying the defendant illegally stole trade secrets from a company he and his sister controlled For profit, one of the companies received funding from the Chinese government.

The Justice Department said in a statement Monday (May 2, 2022) that a federal court charged 52-year-old Gongda Xue for allegedly participating in the theft of GlaxoSmithKline Inc. between January 2010 and January 2016. He was tried and convicted on charges of drug development results.

The court accused Xue Gongda, who worked in research at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Switzerland, and his sister Yu Xue, who worked in a research unit of GlaxoSmithKline in Pennsylvania, USA, of betraying their respective employers trust, exchange the confidential research results of their respective companies, and seek personal benefits through the companies they create.

The Justice Department said Rennuo Pharmaceuticals, a company founded in China by Xue Yu and his associates, received direct funding and support from the Chinese government. Previously, Xue Yu and the other three founders of the company had pleaded guilty in US federal court, and another accomplice had fled the United States and is currently living in China.

Xue Gongda was formally indicted in 2018 and extradited from Switzerland to the United States for trial in December 2019.

"When trade secrets are stolen for the advantage of a foreign adversary, our nation's security and economic stability are jeopardised." the Justice Department said in a statement Monday. "The FBI will continue to have all the investigative resources it deserves." Go hold criminals like Xue and his co-conspirators accountable. They steal intellectual property for their own benefit and the Chinese government."

The United States and other developed Western countries have repeatedly stated that companies and individuals associated with the Chinese government have stolen technology and trade secrets. Beijing has consistently denied involvement in such activities, saying the countries suppress the growth of Chinese companies and politicize ordinary business cases.
